Tenakee Springs

This little town on Chichagof Island has no streets and no cars. ATVs and hand-pulled wagons shuttle supplies to and from boats and state ferry. At the center of town, a bathhouse doubles as a social center. Alaska artist Rie Muñoz spends much time here and the town has inspired many of her humorous watercolor paintings.

The bathhouse has separate hours for men and women. Bathers use the plastic bleach bottles to splash water for scrubbing (waste water drains to the left) and then they enjoy a pleasant soak in the naturally heated hot tub.

At one side of Snyder Mercantile, a bicycle awaits its rider. A parking meter dares visitors to stuff change in it.
