This male panda at the San Diego Zoo was (at the time it was photographed in the mid 1990s) one of only three pandas in the United States. In the wild in China only hundreds of pandas still survive, the losses primarily due to depredation of habitat by humans. Saving the panda is not easy. They must eat only certain kinds of bamboo most of their waking hours, because of their inefficient digestive system. And they only give birth to one cub a year. Now if they were as adaptable as cockroaches or mice--or humans...!
