Compressed under great pressure, glacier ice has fewer air bubbles than ice, say, from one’s refrigerator. Thus the ice reflects the blue part of the spectrum. This effect is especially enhanced on overcast days.

South of Juneau in Southeast Alaska, an astounding fiord called Tracy Arm cleaves through great rock escarpments to huge tidewater glaciers at its head. Some of these photos are from Tracy Arm and others are from Endicott Arm near Dawes Glacier. Still others were made in Shakes Lake near the Stikine River as well as in Glacier Bay.
