Preserving memories of our families and friends is a big part of our lives. We like to hold close these memories at key points in our lives— birth, graduations, weddings, pregnancy, grandparents, and family reunions. One of the best ways to do this is with portraits that express the best of our personalities.

Great portraiture is both art and science, both heart and head. Yes, it’s crucial to have the technical aspects of this craft well in hand (and I’ve been doing this for decades), but perhaps even more important are connections between photographer and portrait subject, and a great understanding of light and composition. Coming from a background in photojournalism, I try to bring a sense of ease, spontaneity and fun to the process, letting the best show through.

From my base in the Coloma Lotus Valley east of Sacramento, I am happy to photograph families and individuals in western El Dorado County. Beyond that, I may charge a fee for travel expenses.

In a typical portrait session I will take at least 50 photos over the span of an hour or two, and usually many more, especially if I’m photographing a group (where the odds are higher that someone in the group will blink or grimace). I encourage props and clothing changes. I prefer to use natural light. We can go for a dreamy, heavily retouched look or for something a bit more realistic.

For final photos, I can do minimal or aggressive retouching, depending on what you want. It’s easy to remove moles and other blemishes, minimize wrinkles, do some slimming if necessary, and also fix a stray hair or two.

Individual Package (suitable for seniors, babies, and more)

$200 buys you the portrait session at a location of your or my choosing (I know some great local venues), plus a DVD of images, all with basic retouching for exposure and color balance. Custom retouching is done on up to three images of your choosing, suitable for framing. You will also have access to an extensive portfolio of the best images on a private, password-protected page. You can order high quality, long-lasting enlargements from this resource.

Family Package

$300 buys you the portrait session at a location of your or my choosing, plus a DVD of images, all with basic retouching for exposure and color balance. Custom retouching is done on up to six images of your choosing, suitable for framing. You will also have access to an extensive portfolio of the best images on a private, password-protected page. My equipment is capable of producing high quality images up to 30”x40”. While this might be appropriate for a large family portrait, more commonly you might want photos 11”x14”, or 16”x20”. Wallet photos are also popular. Inquire for pricing.
